I did this piece while I was living in Arizona, and it was a spin off from the yellow hills series. It was early morning and I noticed how the hills looked really orange in that early light. The excitement of purple next to that orange crush color was such a juxtaposition. so I made sure the washes reflected that also, making the shadows cool while the light was warm. So I felt like it was mornings gesture of orange, reaching out over the yellow hills and painting his own color on the landscape.
